Moalboal, August 2011

Hi, friends of Moalboal!!

Typhoon season now, we just had two of them up north. No wind here
really but overcast for the last 2 weeks. It's a good time to stay
in the hammock and read a good book.

Who would have thought that we would feel more safe here in the
Philippines then England J

There is now a beautiful park facing the ocean just behind municipal
hall. Go towards the fish market and turn right. Someone said
"almost too good looking for Moalboal"

As of today, we are 485 readers of the Moalboal mailing List. Soon magic
500.

ACTIVITIES:

Pool tournament at Chili bar. The last three weeks we have had 14
players in the competition, not sure when that happened last time during
"low season". I made it to the last final somehow but Katz
"the Ninja" stopped my dreams of winning.

PRACTICAL:

There is now a list at the notice board in Chili Bar where you can
tell your friends to sign up for the newsletter. Or just have them
send me an e-mail.

Mike said he saw a newly installed ATM up in Moalboal, it is located in
the alley just after Nancy's beer place. Can someone please check if
it takes VISA cards, that would be a mayor lift for all tourists. Money
exchange has always been tricky on the beach and with crap exchange
rate, Hullier pawn shop (close to the ATM) now has a decent exchange
rate for Dollars.

For those of you that have not been here recently but remember the water
problems we had before. The new water well is now up and running. During
dry season there's no pressure until the evening but then enough to
fill up tanks and that makes life a lot easier for all of us. Now during
the wet season it's enough to fill my tank that is 8 meters up in
the air.

The rumor is that Gaisano (a big supermarket chain) have bought a big
lot between Moalboal and Badian. We all hope that they will start to
build soon, that would also make life easier. It's a bit of an
oxymoron this; we want to be in paradise and away from everything
………… but still have running water, internet and supermarkets
………hmmm go figure.

Our special big stand up freezer, made for making ice fast broke last
Sunday in Chili Bar but I could find one in stock up in Moalboal the
next day and have it delivered. That is amazing thinking about twenty
years ago when we had to send the propane tanks with the Liberando bus
to Cebu for filling.

At the moment the
exchange rate is:
1 $ = 42.44
1 Euro = 60.39
1 Pound = 69.18
1 Swedish crown = 6.53

The Philippine stock market (PHISIX) was on an alltime high 9 days ago
…….. but that was before all what is happening now.

WHALE SHARK SIGHTINGS:

To get the absolute latest whale shark sightings go to Chili Bar and
look at the notice board there. Anyone putting up a sighting receives
a free Ning-Ning drink.

Once you have taken a picture of your whale shark you should go to
http://www.whaleshark.org, they will register the shark.

LETTERS FROM ABROAD:

Hello Lars,

It's been nearly 4 years since we last met. I've missed the whole
group to mention a few Mika, Magnus, mike, Jörgen, Vesa, Robban, (is
he still around), Pieter, Rudy, Sam and the whole Moalboal crowd.

Chicago is beautiful during the summer and fall. You wouldn't expect the
snow and cold to be so horrible during the winter months.

I may have an item to sell. If you recall I had a VW van (
eurovan-caravelle), a 7 seater, black van , 67,000 kilometers model
1998, V6 2.8L.. It still runs good and hasn't been used so much as I had
been away since 2003 and that van had just sat there. When I am in Cebu
we just used it on golfing trips as it was comfortable for long drives.
Mike Wallin and Jörgen were the passengers often loaded into it.

It is stored in Cebu at our condo in Banilad and is just sitting idle in
the basement. I am ccing my wife (Padma) so if there is any interested
party you can communicate w her.

All the best,

Elmo

PRACTICAL TIP:

WARNING: When fueling up in Moalboal at the gas station, make sure to
check the meter. 4 days ago when I was filling, the meter was already on
14 liters when they started. They managed to put 10 liters in Mikes
motorcycle, this when the tank only holds 8 liters. There is however a
new petrol station being built on the road down to the beach, not sure
when it will be ready.

FOR SALE:

If you have something for sale, just E-mail me and I will add it onto
the mail.

GENERAL:

If anyone has any information that they think would be interesting
for people on this list, please do let me know and I will add it in.
If you know anyone that would like to receive this letter, please
tell him or her to send me an E-mail at the address below and I will
add him or her. I've found it too hard to do it through
